At 3:30 – Andy Bichlbaum & Mike Bonanno , gonzo activist geniuses behind “The Yes Men” We saw them in the acclaimed documentary, The Yes Men… well, they’ve been busy:
The Yes Men have received the first Leonore Annenberg Prize for Art and Social Change, presented to artists or artist groups whose work reflects a commitment to social change. The Yes Men will give an interactive lecture Oct. 23 during the opening ceremony for the Creative Time Summit: Revolutions in Public Practice at the New York Public Library. Amy Goodman, the host of the award-winning program Democracy Now!, will introduce and MC.
The Yes Men Fix The World is a screwball true story about two gonzo political activists who, posing as top executives of giant corporations, lie their way into big business conferences and pull off the world’s most outrageous pranks.
From New Orleans to India to New York City, armed with little more than cheap thrift-store suits, the Yes Men squeeze raucous comedy out of all the ways that corporate greed is destroying the planet.
Brüno meets Michael Moore in this gut-busting wake-up call that proves a little imagination can go a long way towards vanquishing the Cult of Greed.
Who knew fixing the World could be so much fun?
4 PM Melissa Roddy journalist and filmmaker joins us to discuss her upcoming documentary Conflict of Interest which examines US policy toward Pakistan and Afghanistan.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST sets out to turn the conventional understanding of Afghanistan and Pakistan on its head by demonstrating that, prior to 2009, American and British policy in the region has been conducted more in keeping with Pakistani interests than Afghan, or even our own. Since taking office, President Barack Obama and his envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, have both complained about the inadequacy of intelligence and the United States’ incoherent policy in the region.
The stakes cannot be overstated. That is why I have decided to go public before completion of my film. Though accurate numbers are difficult to obtain, it is estimated that, from the fall of the communist government in 1992 to the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, between 400,000 and 1.5 million Afghans were killed. If the US and NATO forces withdraw before Afghanistan has recovered enough economically and militarily to defend itself against the 30 something-year-old (and ongoing) assault from Pakistan, it is anticipated that devastation on that same scale will be repeated. Because the Bush Administration so dramatically underfunded and understaffed the campaign in Afghanistan for the past 8 years, many Afghans came to believe that Bush was pro-Taliban. President Obama is correct in his assessment that this is really not year eight, but rather, Year One.
The President wants to grant the U.S. Army’s request for an additional 20,000 soldiers for Afghanistan, in an effort to correct the mistakes of the Bush II Administration. However, it is clear that he is under intense political pressure to back away from this position. It is important to help him withstand that pressure and do what’s best for both the U.S. and Afghanistan.

We welcome back Oliver Benjamin author and founder of The Church of the Latter Day Dude!
…Of course, if you want a nutshell explanation now, here’s one:Dudeism is a belief system that teaches us that the universe wants us to take it easy. Getting all worked up over nothing goes profoundly against the laws of nature, psychology, sociology, bowling and several tropical countries. It’s about finding ways to maintain peace of mind in a world with too many ins-and-outs and strands to keep in your head.
And it’s about finding ways to keep your heart light when the bastards are trying to get you down. It’s basically Taoism meets The Big Lebowski, plus a big scoop of Humanism and a sprinkling of Buddhism. …
We also spoke with filmmaker Paul Manly ‘You, Me, and the SPP: Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule’ What do secrecy, police provocateurs, an assault on democracy and infringements on citizens’ rights have in common? The Security Prosperity Partnership.
‘You, Me, and the S.P.P: Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule’ is a feature length documentary which exposes the latest manifestation of a corporatist agenda that is undermining the democratic authority of the citizens of North America. Two processes, the Security Prosperity Partnership (SPP) & the Trade Investment Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) are rapidly eroding & eliminating standards, civil liberties, regulatory systems & institutions put in place over generations through the democratic process.
Proponents of the SPP & TILMA say that they are needed to keep trade flowing, opponents say *these agreements not only undermine the democratic authority of citizens they threaten the sovereignty of the three nations through the integration of military, security structures & regulatory regimes*.
Here are a few quotes on the film:
- “… after the shock of Sept 11 … that crisis was expertly manipulated by our political leaders to push through a range of policies they actually had wanted to push through before Sept 11, but didn’t have the political conditions that made that possible.” – Naomi Klein, Canadian award-winning journalist, author
- “…if we go along with the Americans on their military, on their human rights, on their Patriot Act, on immigration and refugee policy, on energy, on all kinds of regulations over pesticides or whatever, then they will allow us access to their markets.” – Gordon Laxer, Director, The Parkland Institute, Alberta
- “… what the SPP really represents is a parallel government, so that the important decisions are either made outside of parliament & outside of legislatures or they make it impossible for those kinds of decisions to be made in those legislative bodies, so that democracy is slowly being gutted.” – Murray Dobbin, Canadian author, journalist.
The P4 Project: “Pot, Propaganda, Paranoia, and Politics“, is an interactive multi-dimensional documentary installation, which explores the historic, current & future impact of cannabis prohibition in Canada.
A representation of the information battle in the war on drugs, the P4 Project studies the views & motives of the people who put their lives on the line to either oppose or impose prohibition.
Featured are interviews with leaders in the law enforcement community & some of Canada’s leading anti-prohibition activists, people whose everyday activity violates & puts them in direct confrontation with the Law.
To complete the picture, a series of interviews represent the view of Canadian cannabis laws from inside the legal, political, medical & academic communities.
